To gym or not to gym, that is the question
I have a confession to make: I hate the gym. It bores me to tears.
Now, here's the shocking problem. It's getting colder, I am a cold-wimp, and it gets dark pretty damn early, so riding my bike outdoors on weekdays is not so much an option anymore. Or maybe it is...
Maybe I should start by the beginning. If I have to go to the gym, I'd rather do it early in the mornings. Now the cheap gym I go to (WSC, if you want to know) has spinning classes at 6:30 am only on Mondays and Fridays. Only two days is just not enough. And, depending on how much I rode during the weekend, Mondays may be "rest" days. Also, on Mondays I climb.
These days my lazy unashamed butt has been driving to work, since I have parking, and it is sooo comfortable. Maybe I should start riding to work again, it won't be training per se, but it is better than nothing. I don't look forward to fight with cars though, specially since this job actually allows me to have a life, I'll be riding home dark and in the middle of rush hour (leaving the office before 7pm was not a possibility in my two previous jobs).
Or, my wimpy ass could decide instead to keep driving, bring the bike and actually go for a ride at Hains Point after work, also dark and cold, but probably better training than riding home and less likely to get into a match with a car.
Now, here is the issue: if I ride to work, I have not choice other than riding back home, whether I like it or not. If I drive with the bike in the car, I always have the possibility to bail out. And at 6pm, when you know it is cold and dark out there, bailing is sooooooo tempting. A "commitment device" becomes almost mandatory.
Maybe I should suck it up and go to the gym in the evenings.... ugh, that sounds worse than riding in the cold. And there usually appear, out of nowhere, tempting alternatives that involve food and drinks which are very hard to refuse and are instantly more appealing than the gym (I am so weak).
Not sure what I'll do. But I have to do something. If I continue like this (aka doing nothing) I will become the blob so fast, it is not even funny.
Ideas? Suggestions?

DC Blogs noted! Nice.
Anyway, I am ill equipped to weigh in on this subject, since the last time I exercised was before the "spiderman" incident that ruined my foot for a year. Two years ago.
But back when I used to run, I struggled with this dilemma because I too am a horrible cold wimp. I would gladly run 15 miles in 92 degree weather, but when it gets below 40 I start to whimper and cry.
My solution was usually to go to work early, and run in the early evening instead, when it's at least tolerably warm for the most part. I also have a treadmill (now used as a storage shelf) that would occasionally get a turn if it was really awful (like sleeting) outside. I could never do the gym thing though. Too much effort, basically doubles the time involved.
How about some stationary riding at home in front of the boob tube or with some Guns n' Roses cranked up?
Another possibility is just accept the blob and come out for drinks with us...
Thanks, Jamie! well, I still have not figure it out... yes, riding the trainer at home is also a choice, but probably the most hated one, maybe I need to get re-acquainted with it. In any case, I am still up for coming out to play with you guys regardless of my blob situation.
If you want, I'm more than happy to join you for an evening or two of riding at HP. I need some motivation to get of my ever expanding rear as well. Gimme a call and we can figure it out.
Foggy, that sounds like a great idea. I usually climb o Mondays, but any other day of the week will work well for me.
